A few weeks back, we shared that we had introduced a live conversation series where you can learn directly from business leaders. This is part of what we call #LevelUp – content created for current and aspiring business owners and entrepreneurs. It’s a curation of useful tips to help grow your business as well as other interesting insights we think are worth sharing.
For our debut edition, we had Ellena Affah who is the founder of Natural Hair Rocks, a leading e-commerce brand in the hair and beauty space. Ellena shared multiple tips on how small to medium businesses in Nigeria can attract clients from all over the world and we’ve rounded up some of the best seven to share with you.
1. Understand the market you are selling to
Research to know if your products are needed by international customer. Ensure that you are solving a problem and providing value. You need to understand the market very well. Do they really need your product? Does your product stand out? Why would your customer want to spend extra? These are some questions you need to ask before breaking into the international market.
2. Content is king!
Brand your business like you’re expecting a CNN feature. Don’t post content that is not associated with your products or demeans your brand. Invest in great product packaging so people are encouraged to share pictures of your product. You’re building an experience, so ensure that it looks great from the onset for your customers.
3. Invest in your marketing
Run ads targeted at the countries you want to get customers. While you’re doing everything right, it doesn’t count if the target audience cannot see what you’re doing. So, ensure that you’re heavily invested in marketing and showing what you’re selling to the audience it is made for.
4. Influencer marketing works
It works because people trust people. Use micro-influencers if you can’t afford the more popular influencers. You can also send your products to influencers to try them for free. For Ellena and Natural Hair Rockss, it was work also worked with people that other people could trust. For us, it was micro-influencers in the country that we wanted to penetrate into. This helped our prospective customers trust us

5. Have a functional website
If you are trying to sell to international clients, invest in a good website that accepts payment in USD so that customers don’t drop off.
6. On shipping: under-promise and over-deliver
If delivery takes 3-5 working days, communicate 7 – 10 working days. Your customers will be happy to receive their packages early.
7. Listen to your customers
They will give you insights on how to improve your products or service. Your products must be great because great products sell themselves
